AI onboarding assistant: how Obi by Cor runs onboarding with every new user

By Mantas Aleksiejevas

An AI onboarding assistant helps each new user get set up. Obi by Cor goes further: it can run the full onboarding process with your customers. It builds a custom plan for each one, reaches out to them directly, guides them through setup with screenshare over live calls, sets things up for them where permitted, and hands over to your team when a person is needed.

What a good onboarding assistant does

Obi is an agent that can run the full onboarding process with your customers. It builds custom plans, reaches out to customers directly, guides them through with screenshare over live calls and sets things up for them where permitted. Here is each job in order, and what Obi does.

Plans for this customer. Every customer needs something a little different to get working. Obi builds a custom onboarding plan for each customer, based on what they need.

Makes the first move. A help widget waits to be opened. Obi reaches out to the customer directly, so onboarding starts without anyone on your team chasing.

Guides on the real screen. On a live call, the customer shares their screen. Obi sees their actual account, and their other tabs and apps too, and leads them step by step.

Sets things up. Where you permit it, Obi does the setup steps for them, inside their own permissions. It asks before major actions.

Knows when to hand over. When something needs a person, Obi passes the customer to your team with what was done and where they stopped, plus a report.

Watch it work: one new customer, start to finish

For example, a new customer of a property management tool needs to add their first building and invite their tenants. Here is how that onboarding goes with Obi.

  1. Obi builds a plan for this customer: the building details, then the tenant import, then the tenant invites.
  2. Obi reaches out to the customer to start onboarding.
  3. The customer joins a live call from their browser. There is nothing to install. Obi confirms the goal: "Add my building and invite tenants."
  4. Obi asks two questions. How many units are there? Is the tenant list in a spreadsheet? Then it adjusts the plan.
  5. The customer shares their screen. Obi guides them to the right page and through the building details.
  6. The tenant list is in a spreadsheet in another tab. Obi follows them there and helps get the columns right.
  7. The import step is long and fiddly. Obi offers to do it. The customer says yes, and Obi does it inside the customer's own permissions.
  8. One tenant email bounces because of a setting only an admin can change. Obi explains why, and hands over to your team with the details.
  9. After the call, your team gets a report: what was done, where the customer got stuck and who needs a follow-up.
  10. If the customer stops halfway, the plan is still open, and the report shows your team what is left.

That is the difference between an assistant that answers and one that runs onboarding. For a longer example over more than one session, see a setup session step by step.

Where the customer meets Obi

Obi reaches out to start onboarding. Customers can also start a session themselves, or come back to one, from a link in a welcome email or help article, inside your onboarding portal, or inside your product. They join in the browser, with nothing to install. See how Obi works.

What it learns from, and who keeps it current

Obi is ready from what you already have. Your help docs, onboarding calls or team notes become live onboarding sessions. There are no tours, flows or click paths to build, and nothing to tag.

Your team runs Cor from Cor's platform or from inside Claude, ChatGPT and other AI assistants, so nobody learns a new tool. See how to run onboarding from the AI you already use. Obi does the onboarding. Your team approves changes and steps in when a person is needed.

Other kinds of AI onboarding assistants

Not every tool called an onboarding assistant does the same job. There are three main kinds.

KindWhat it does for a new userExamples
Onboarding agent that runs the processPlans each customer's onboarding, reaches out, guides live calls with screenshare, sets things up where allowed and hands overObi by Cor

Many teams use a support assistant for tickets and Obi for setup, and hand over between them. Read our reviews of Fin, Userpilot and Userflow. See our guide on how to pick one for B2B SaaS. Frequently asked questions

What is an AI onboarding assistant?

Software that helps each new user get set up. Obi by Cor can run the whole onboarding: it builds a plan for each customer, reaches out to them, guides them on live screenshare calls and sets things up where permitted.

How is this different from the chatbot in our help widget?

A chatbot waits for someone to open it and type. Obi makes the first move: it plans each customer's onboarding, reaches out, leads them step by step on their screen and can do steps for them where you allow it.

Does the assistant wait for users to ask for help?

No. Obi reaches out to customers directly to get onboarding started, then follows the plan it built for them.

Can the assistant do the setup for the user, or only explain it?

Obi can do steps. It works inside the user's own permissions and asks before major actions. You choose what it may do.

What happens when a user gets stuck on something the assistant can't fix?

Obi tells the user it will bring in your team and hands over with what they were doing and where they stopped. The question also shows up in the session report.

Can we put the assistant inside our product?

Yes. Obi can run inside your product, inside your onboarding portal, or from a link.

Will our users have to install anything?

No. They click a link and join in the browser, and they start the screen share themselves.

Do onboarding assistants replace product tours?

Not always. Tours still suit short, fixed paths. Read AI onboarding agents vs product tours.
